Since the premiere of Dancing with the Stars, the world of ballroom dancing has boomed. Now millions of Americans tune in each week to watch their favorite stars battle it out on the dance floor. Fortunately for UA students, you do not have to be a “star” to ballroom dance like one.
Jimmy and Jennifer Kunz saw students’ excitement for ballroom dancing blossom when they brought The Crimson Tide Ballroom Dancers (CTBD) to UA in 2010. It has since transformed itself into a popular club on campus. Officers and board members organize free dance lessons and monthly themed dances to promote the dance to the greater Tuscaloosa area. CTBD strives to recruit non-dancers and show them how easy, and fun, ballroom dancing can be.
Beginner and intermediate dance lessons are held Sunday evenings at Calvary Baptist Church. Lessons are centered around eight dances: Foxtrot, Watlz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Hussle, Samba, Tango, and Two-Step.
The hard work of dance lessons pays off at the dances. Each dance’s theme corresponds to a holiday/event in that month.
